JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has thrown his support behind Elon Musk‘s proposal for a government efficiency commission, describing it as a “very good idea” during a recent interview at the India Investor Summit on Tuesday. Dimon highlighted the need for more government accountability and greater public spending efficiency, as per New York Post.
In a conversation with CNBC-TV18’s Prashant Nair, Dimon said, “So Elon, this idea about having an efficiency commission, I actually like the idea.I think governments have to become more efficient, more competent and look at when they take money what do they get for it?” He compared it to Al Gore’s 1993 “Reinventing Government” initiative, which sought to improve the effectiveness of federal operations.“We really need to do it. In America, we will do it, I’m sure,” he added.
Dimon’s endorsement comes shortly after former President Donald Trump backed Musk’s proposal, pledging to appoint the Tesla CEO to lead the commission if he were to be re-elected. The proposed government efficiency commission would conduct a thorough financial and performance audit of the federal government, targeting fraud and improper payments made through various government programmes. Trump indicated that the commission would offer recommendations for “drastic reforms” intended to promote efficiency, aiming to eliminate fraudulent activities within six months of its establishment.
Musk confirmed on social media that he would be willing to serve in the position. He said, “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed.”
Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, accused Trump and Musk of seeking to dismantle the federal government’s civil service and replace workers with their allies. “There’s nothing efficient about that”, he said.
