INDUdhayanidhi inaugurates park renovated under Namakku Naame Thittam in Nungambakkam

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday (March 17, 2025) inaugurated a park in Nungambakkam redeveloped by MOP Vaishnav College by contributing 100% funds, under the Namakku Naame Thittam scheme. The park made headlines last year after a child was grievously injured in a dog attack.

The park redevelopment is part of the institution’s initiative to plant trees and improve green cover in the city. As part of this project, facilities, including a play area for children, an outdoor gym, a gazebo, and a groundwater recharge facility, have been created at an estimated cost of ₹30 lakh.

MOP Vaishnav College principal Archna Prasad said residents and students will have access to the park, making it a hub of activity, while creating awareness about the environment. “Our college has taken initiatives to conserve the environment. We plant saplings and maintain the trees to mark the visit of dignitaries,” said Ms. Prasad.

GCC Ward 111 Councillor Nandhini said the college has appointed workers to maintain the park. The park will remain open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A waterbody has also been established in the park. The groundwater table in the area is around 3 metres below the ground level. “It was originally a well. We widened it and renovated the waterbody. The groundwater in the area is fit for drinking. It is not polluted,” said an official.

The inauguration of the park is expected to promote more civic infrastructure projects under Namakku Naame Thittam in the city, said an official. Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister K.N. Nehru, Mayor R. Priya, Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumar, and Chennai Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran participated in the event.
