The Telangana Human Rights Commission (HRC) is investigating a complaint about the dire conditions at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad. The complaint, lodged by Advocate Rama Rao Imaneni, was submitted on Thursday (March 13, 2025), highlights infrastructure issues and unhygienic conditions, affecting both patients and medical staff at the State’s largest public hospital.
He stated that the hospital’s lifts have reportedly been out of service for over a year, forcing doctors, patients, senior faculty members, and even students with mobility issues to climb stairs in the four-storey building daily.
“Medicos have also raised concerns about the hospital’s unhygienic kitchen, where rats and cockroaches have been spotted. Adding to the grim state of affairs, a pile of broken hospital beds has been abandoned outside the respiratory medicine administrative block on the eighth floor, providing shelter for stray dogs. The hospital’s hallways remain littered with waste, while the drinking water facility has also been deemed unsafe, as visitors frequently use the same taps meant for general use,” he mentioned in the complaint.
He added that despite having a capacity of 2,200 beds, Gandhi Hospital struggles with these persistent infrastructure problems. “Official figures indicate that the hospital handles over 1,500 outpatient department (OPD) registrations, 150 inpatient department (IPD) admissions, and 25-30 emergency cases daily,” states the complaint.
