Special resolution in Erode Corporation council seeks government nod to reduce property tax

INDSpecial resolution in Erode Corporation council seeks government nod to reduce property tax

A special resolution was passed during the council meeting of Erode Corporation on Wednesday evening, seeking permission from the State government to reduce the increased property tax that took effect on April 1, 2022.

The resolution, moved by Mayor S. Nagarathinam, highlighted the concerns raised by residents, turmeric traders, powerloom owners, tannery unit owners, and trade and industry associations. They argued that property tax rates in Erode Corporation were significantly higher compared with Coimbatore and other civic bodies. “Since inequality exists in the tax structure, residents and industrialists have been urging the civic body to reduce the tax,” the Mayor said. Councillors also expressed their concerns during the meeting.

The property tax increase was implemented based on Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department Order No. 53, dated March 30, 2022, which mandated a tax hike across all Corporations in the State. The resolution noted that all wards were classified into four zones — A, B, C, and D — with varying tax increases for each zone. In response to public representations, the resolution urged the government to allow the civic body to lower the tax rates. The resolution was passed unanimously. An official said the resolution would be forwarded to the government for further action.
