Tiruchi Corporation’s sanitation workers have earned praise for their diligence after they recovered and returned three sovereigns of gold jewellery mistakenly discarded in a garbage bag in Ambikapuram, Kalkandar Kottai Road, under Ward 36 of Tiruchi Corporation.
N.S. Suresh Kasi Raj, 56, a senior electrical engineer at Ponmalai Railway Workshop, routinely removes his gold chain and rings before sleeping. On March 6, he had placed them near banana peels. The next morning, his family unknowingly discarded the jewellery with the waste, which was collected by sanitation workers.
Mr. Suresh, who realised this later, rushed to the waste segregation centre, where workers informed him that the waste had been transported to the Ariyamangalam dump.
Mr. Suresh reached the dump yard and sought help from van driver P. Arunagiri who regularly picks up waste from his area and sanitation workers A. Pandi Selvi and R. Seetha who were in the dump. Without hesitation, Ms. Selvi and Ms. Seetha sifted through the garbage, eventually recovering the jewellery and returned it to him.
“I sincerely thank the sanitation workers for their immediate efforts. Their dedication is truly commendable. Had I arrived late, the trash would have been buried under more waste, making recovery impossible,” said Mr. Suresh.
Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan appreciated the efforts of sanitation workers.
