Salem Collector issues warning against child marriages

INDSalem Collector issues warning against child marriages

People getting involved in child marriages would face two years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹1 lakh, Collector R. Brindha Devi has warned.

The Collector, in a release, said that marrying a girl under 18 or a boy under 21 is illegal under the Child Marriage Act, 2006. Such marriages threaten children’s well-being, health, and education, and efforts are on to ensure children’s education and secure their futures. The release said a district team comprising social welfare, child protection, police, and village officers are working to prevent child marriages and called for child development officers and Anganwadi workers to monitor and intervene in suspected cases. Awareness campaigns are also being conducted in schools, colleges, villages, and public gatherings, she said.

School dropouts are a major cause of child marriages and the School Education Department has been asked to provide dropout details to the District Social Welfare Officer. Officials will counsel parents and students to ensure continued education, she added.

Complaints about child marriage or child abuse will be addressed immediately, and strict action will be taken against offenders. For complaints, contact the toll-free women’s helpline at 181 or the child helpline at 1098. Further information can be accessed at Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr. Annadurai at 99409 91160, the release added.
