Residents of Kovaipudur have opposed the Coimbatore Corporation’s move to build a garbage transfer station in the area.
The Corporation has started works to construct at ₹9 crore a plant with 200 tonnes a day capacity on the facility at Q-Block, Kovaipudur.
“There is already a Micro Composting Centre at the site, and we are affected by foul odour and flies. Several houses surround the location, along with a public park used by people for walking and recreational activities. If the garbage transfer station is established, we fear the situation will worsen, leading to increased foul odour on a daily basis,” said A. Baskaran, a resident.
Members of the Kovaipudur Residents’ Welfare Association submitted a petition to Mayor R. Ranganayaki on Tuesday, opposing construction of the facility.
A sanitary official from the Corporation said that the garbage transfer station would not cause foul odour, as it would only serve as a transfer point and no waste processing would take place there, unlike the MCC.
