Collector K. Elambahavath flagged off an advanced free ambulance service equipped with emergency medical facilities under the initiative of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), at the District Collectorate on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that the NHAI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Life Care Limited, an union government organisation to provide free ambulance service across India.

As part of the initiative, the advanced free ambulance service has been launched in Tamil Nadu, specifically for highway users in Thoothukudi district. The ambulance is equipped with a cardiac monitoring device, ventilator, a defibrillator, essential medicines and other critical care instruments.

Additionally a trained medical team will be available 24×7 in the vehicle. The public can avail of this emergency ambulance service by calling the toll free number 1033, he added.

He said the ambulance will be stationed at Pudur Pandiyapuram toll plaza on the Thoothukudi-Madurai National Highway. From this location, the service will cover a radius of around 60 km in both directions, he said.
