Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Mangaluru MLA U.T. Khader said on Saturday that a new residential Government PU College for girls from minority communities was likely to start functioning in Mangaluru Assembly constituency from April 2026.

Mr. Khader said the new college was among the projects related to his Assembly constituency that have been mentioned in the 2025-26 Budget of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

“I am thankful to Mr. Siddaramaiah for approving the proposal to set up a residential PU College in my constituency. It has been proposed to start a degree college at that place later,” he said.

Mr. Khader said there already was one PU college each in Deralakatte and Harekala. Two more PU volleges are set to start shortly. A new day-scholar PU college is also proposed to come up in Mangaluru Assembly constituency. One high school in the constituency has been proposed to be upgraded to a PU College, he said.

Containing sea erosion

The Budget has sanctioned ₹200 crore for sea erosion prevention works along the Karnataka coast. It proposed to spend ₹65 crore for building a sea wall between Someshwar and Battampady. Allocation has been made to fill gaps in sea erosion prevention works between Kotepura and Someshwar, he added.

Lauding efforts of Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai in getting a sanction for opening government medical college in Puttur, Mr. Khader said the opening of a new college in Puttur will go a long way in providing quality healthcare to residents of Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia taluks.
