INDMinister inspects sites for proposed varsity in Kumbakonam

Minister for Higher Education Govi Chezhiaan on Wednesday inspected some of the sites shortlisted for establishing the proposed Kalaignar University in Kumbakonam.

The new university, named after former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, would start functioning from the forthcoming academic year. The university will have jurisdiction over Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Ariyalur districts with 18 colleges which are currently under the Bharathidasan University in Tiruchi.

Accompanied by District Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam, Mr. Chezhiaan inspected a couple of buildings — the Kalaiarangam at Sakkottai Road and the Government Men’s College Hostel — shortlisted for the temporary campus of the varsity. He inspected the sites identified for the permanent campus at Kallapuliyur on Anaikkarai Road and another site on Valangaiman Road. The sites would be finalised in consultation with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, he said.
