The Kerala High Court on Thursday directed the State government to inform the court of the medical facilities made available to convicts and other prisoners in prisons in the State.
Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan passed the order when the bail petition filed by K.N. Ananda Kumar, an accused in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds scam case, came up for hearing.
The court also directed the government to file a detailed statement in this regard. The court directed the government to clarify whether expert treatment was provided in emergency cases and whether jail authorities could send prisoners for specialised medical treatment, if needed. The court also noted that there was a general tendency among the accused to pass out all of a sudden while they were being taken by the police. When the bail plea came up last time, the court had orally observed that that bail could not be granted on medical grounds unless the prosecution certified that the accused required additional medical care.
