India has the potential to generate 54 GW of ocean power, including 12.4 GW of wave power, NITI Aayog Member V.K. Saraswat said at the ‘International Symposium on Advancements in Marine Renewable Energy 2025’ (ISAMRE 2025), which began on Monday (March 17, 2025).
The two-day symposium is being organised by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, a press release said.
“India has been producing electricity through offshore wind farms. In the coming years, environmentally friendly methods, such as floating solar and wave power generation, will generate less carbon emissions and create employment opportunities,” he said, adding that the sector would witness a 22.8% growth between 2023-32.
Since the country has a massive coastline, marine renewable energy provides a good opportunity to generate sustainable and emission-free power, Mr. Saraswat said.
Balaji Ramakrishnan, Director, NIOT, Purnima Jalihal, head of NIOT’s Energy and Freshwater Department, researchers, and students were among those who participated.
