Morning walkers at Thiruvanmiyur beach observed dead fish scattered along the sands on Sunday (March 9, 2025). G. Ramakrishnan, who had visited the beach to watch the sunrise with his family, said that a stretch of approximately 500 metres was covered with dead fish.
“It was a sad sight; what could have been food for people was on the sands. Some fish did not have eyes. The rest of the beach was quite clean,” he said.
Fishermen stated that the fish had not been killed due to any kind of poisoning. “Sometimes, when the catch is particularly large, the boats cannot bear the weight, and we transfer the fish from one boat to another. During this process, some fish fall into the water, and these are the ones that were washed ashore,” explained a community leader.
