The Anna Square police detained a vehicle in which more than 28 kilograms of gold were brought from a jewellery manufacturing unit from Bengaluru to the city on Tuesday.
A senior official of the City police said a patrol team of the Anna Square police station stopped a car with four occupants which was proceeding on the service road of Marina Beach on Tuesday night. On inspection, the police found more than 28 kgs of gold which was brought from a gold showroom in Bengaluru for its branch in Sowcarpet and other jewellery showrooms in the city. Though the employees of the jewellery showroom who were taken to the Anna Square police station for Investigation said they had the receipts for the gold jewellery, the police team alerted the Commercial tax team at Ezhilagam.
A roaming team of the Commercial tax arrived at the police station and took all the items including the seized car along with the employees for further Investigation.
The Commercial Tax Department office on Greams Road is investigating the matter.
