The council meeting of Sivakasi Corporation abruptly ended within five minutes with Mayor, I. Sangeetha announcing that all 98 resolutions in the agenda having been unanimously passed amidst a melee, on Tuesday.
However, after the Mayor left the council hall, majority of the 48 councillors of the Corporation, including the Deputy Mayor, K. Vignesh Priya, stayed back for more than one hour.
As soon as the council meeting started, though with a delay of 45 minutes, at 11.15 a.m., the councillors from the ruling DMK raised objections to the five resolutions seeking the ratification of the council for approving five new layouts in the city.
Amidst a din, the Mayor left the council hall in a huff without any proper discussion on any of the subjects.
Some of the councillors suggested to the Corporation Commissioner, Krishnamoorthi, that the council meeting could continue with the Deputy Mayor in the chair.
The councillors claimed that they had no details about the layouts being approved.
Even the Congress member, A.P. Ravishankar of ward 43, who is a member of the Standing Committee on Town Planning Committee, said that he was not aware of any such layout.
“I even do not know the locations of these layouts,” he said.
After the councillors raised objections, the Commissioner clarified to them that all the 98 resolutions, except for the five on layout approval were deemed to be passed.
