WASHINGTON: US elections are getting spicy in more than one sense. Far-right MAGA provocateur Linda Loomer‘s jibe that the White House would smell of curry if Kamala Harris is elected president has opened up a can of worms — or masala — with growing questions in Republican circles about why Donald Trump is embracing her — literally.
Pictures of Trump with his arm around Loomer’s waist began circulating on social media on Thursday, with trolls suggesting she is his latest squeeze, and asking “where’s Melania?” Trump’s wife has not been seen with him on the campaign trail.
Republican grandees and lawmakers are urging Trump to distance himself from Loomer amid reports that she has been traveling with him on the campaign trail, and is infecting him with her extreme views. One such lawmaker, Senator Lindsey Graham, faced the full force of Loomer’s toxic tirades on Thursday when she accused him of being disloyal to Trump in a social media post, and said,“When is Lindsey coming out of the closet?…We all know you are gay…”
Shocked Republican stalwarts are sounding the alarm over Loomer’s malign shadow over Trump, wondering if she is responsible for his outburst about illegal immigrants eating pet dogs, cats, and geese, given her transparently racist views. Her comments about Kamala Harris and curry even wafted into the White House on Thursday, with Biden’s press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre characterizing it as “racist poison” and “exactly the kind of hateful, decisive rhetoric that we should denounce.”
Trump himself was triggered last week when Kamala Harris visited a spice store in Pennsylvania which openly advertises itself as anti-Trump. After Harris made a much-publicised visit to the store and tweeted, “I look forward to using my new seasonings from Penzeys Spices in Pittsburgh at our next Sunday family dinner,” Trump lashed out saying, “Comrade Kamala Harris goes to an ultra Left Wing, Trump Hating, spice shop, which I hear has terrible, overpriced product, and calls for “unity.”
Moderate Republicans meanwhile reminded Loomer that her curry dig would include Trump supporters such as JD Vance’s wife Usha, and Vivek Ramaswamy, both of Indian-origin. Some of them accused her of alienating 5 million Indian-Americans even as analysts are examining what effect Trump’s rant about “pet-eating illegal immigrants from Haiti” will have on the nearly half million Haitian-Americans, a majority of them in Florida.
At least one famous Haitian-American — coincidentally bearing the last name Curry — quickly made his views known. Stephen Curry, a four-time NBA champion and considered one of the greatest hoopster of all time, announced his support for Kamala Harris on Thursday, saying, “My beautiful half-Haitian mother will be roasting a pig tonight, just like Kamala Harris did during the debate.”
The White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, is also Haitian-American, and the first openly LGBT person to serve in the position.
