The Puducherry government has worked out a plan to strengthen its 24 km coastline under ‘Strengthening Coastal Resilience and Economy in the Union Territory of Puducherry’ (PY-SHORE) programme, Minister for Public Works K. Lakshminarayanan said in the Assembly on Tuesday (March 18, 2025).

Replying to a question by Anibal Kennedy, the Minister said the government plans to address the problem of sea erosion and protect the coastline from vulnerabilities by implementing PY-SHORE programme. The Minister said the government was aware of the problems faced by the coastal community and was taking steps accordingly to address the issues.

According to officials, the PY-SHORE project was submitted to the Department of Economic Affairs, Government of India in October 2024. The project, envisaged at a total cost of ₹1,433 crore with the support of the World Bank, is proposed to address the “pressing coastal challenges and coastal livelihood vulnerabilities thereby ensuring a resilient coastal economy for Puducherry.”

The proposal has been cleared by the Ministry of Earth sciences and Ministry of Environment and Forests, and it is in consideration of NITI AYOG and Ministry of Home Affairs, said an official
