Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said a 58ft tall statue of Potti Sriramulu would be installed in Amaravati in a year and his house in Padamatipalli village in Nellore district converted into a museum. Besides, a health centre and high school building with modern facilities would be constructed in his name there.

Paying rich tributes to Potti Sriramulu on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary, at his residence, on Sunday (March 16, 2025), Mr. Naidu said Andhra State was formed as Sriramulu had undertaken the rigorous 58-day fast and ultimately laid down his life for the noble cause.

He asserted that Sriramulu lived for the people and the Telugu community and his supreme sacrifice paved the way for carving the separate State for Telugu-speaking people, from the Madras Presidency.

The Central Government of the day was not in favour of the creation of Andhra State but it conceded the demand after Sriramulu sat on a fast-unto-death and had eventually breathed his last on December 15, 1952.

The Centre had no alternative except to concede the demand for formation of Andhra State as a public outrage erupted following Sriramulu’s death. Andhra State came into existence on October 1, 1953. Later, regions in Telangana with it, and in 2014, it split into two States namely Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Mr. Naidu said 12 programmes would be organised throughout the year from March 16 till the 126th birth anniversary of Sriramulu to honour his struggles and legacy. Municipal Administration & Urban Development Minister P. Narayana and others were present.
