Decomposed bodies of a woman and her two daughters were recovered from their residence in south-east Delhi’s Molarband area on Wednesday, said the police.

No note has been recovered from the spot, said a senior police officer.

“Forensic experts have examined the site. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death,” the officer added.

A team from the Badarpur police station rushed to the spot after neighbours informed them about a foul smell emanating from the house where Puja, 42, lived with her daughters, aged eight and 18.

The team found the bodies on the floor.

“It appears the bodies were four to five days old,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Ravi Kumar Singh.

He added that probe teams are checking CCTV footage to learn about the movements of the family members over the past few days.

“It appears that Puja’s husband worked as a driver in Gurugram. We are verifying all the facts,” the DCP added.

The police are probing various angles, including financial distress, said the officer.

Puja’s daughters had not been going to school for the last few months, he added.

‘No assault marks’

“The bodies are in a decomposed state. Crime teams will visit the spot again to collect more evidence. No assault marks have been found on the bodies,” Mr. Singh also said.

The area residents said that the family had not paid rent for the past months.

Terming the incident as “tragic”, M.P. Yadav, a neighbour, said, “Puja was staying here with her daughters for the last couple of years, during which we never saw her husband.”

Another resident, Satish Pal Pradhan, said, “Someone told us that Puja’s husband had passed away a while back.”
