In consultation with the Southern Railway officials, the Government Railway police (GRP) is exploring the option to cancel train passes for college students who are damaging trains by pelting stones and causing troubles to the commuters.
The proposal to take stringent action against college students has come in the wake of GRP Chennai Superintendent of Police, I. Easwaran, convening a consultative meeting with 23 police inspectors in Chennai division on Wednesday.
A senior official of the Chennai division GRP said clashes between college students intent on dominating a route have resulted in pelting stones at suburban trains.
The police official said certain routes have also been identified as trouble spots, including the Beach-Arakkonam section, which is dominated by the students of Presidency college. The students of Pachaiyappa college are attempting to dominate the Moore Market complex suburban section. However, the main problem is the meeting points of the suburban trains that carry students from some railway stations of Annanur and Thirumullaivoyal. The GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel work in shifts to prevent violence on these routes.
The GRP has also been following with the concerned college administration to take disciplinary action against those students who have been identified for causing trouble or are involved in such unlawful activities.
The GRP officials have also been conducting awareness meetings in several government and private colleges to avoid students resorting to violent attitudes.
