Construction of the main flyover on Avinashi Road from Uppilipalayam for almost 10 km at almost ₹1,700 crore is expected to get over in a couple of months.

Works for the 17.25 metres wide (four-lane) main carriageway, which started in 2020, was expected to be completed by the end of December, 2024.

An official of the State Highways Department said construction of five spans for this portion of the flyover is delayed for various reasons.

For two spans at Nava India junction, the electricity lines were shifted this week and construction works have just commenced. For three spans in Hope college area, one is 52 metres long and will come at the second level across a railway line. The Railways is inspecting it at every stage as it is a steel span. It will be erected soon, the official said.

The Highways Department has asked the flyover contractor to complete the main carriageway by the end of May this year. However, works may take a slightly longer time, said sources in the know of the project’s progress.

The official added that of the eight ramps planned as part of the flyover project, four were completed. The remaining ramps are likely to be completed on time. Works for service roads alongside the ramps will be taken up after that.

Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar inspected construction of the flyover for the entire stretch on Wednesday and elicited details about the special features that are part of the project. He also enquired about the challenges in the construction work, the official said.
