An allegation of medical negligence has been levelled against the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, by the family members of a woman from Perambra in the district, who died there on Wednesday (March 12, 2025) morning following a surgery conducted on March 7.

According to sources, Vilasini, 57, was admitted to the hospital on March 4 with post-menopausal bleeding as well as endometrial hyperplasia, a pre-cancerous condition, for a surgery to remove her uterus and ovaries. The doctors claimed that Vilasini was already on medication for rheumatoid arthritis and abnormal blood pressure. After the surgery, her relatives were informed that an injury was noticed in her large intestine and it had been stitched through a laparoscopic surgery.

Vilasini was shifted to the ward on March 8 and the relatives claimed that the doctors had allowed her to have normal food. However, when she started having food, Vilasini complained of severe stomach pain and was shifted to the intensive care unit. The relatives claimed that another surgery was performed to clear the infection in her body. They added that her condition, however, deteriorated by March 11 and the death happened a day later.

The doctors, meanwhile, said that an emergency open surgery was conducted on March 10 as there had been a “leak” in the stitched part of the intestine. Faecal peritonitis, leaking of the faecal matter into the abdominal cavity, was diagnosed and required treatment was given. Though Vilasini was put on ventilator support, she could not be saved, the doctors said.

The police are yet to file any case related to the incident.
